Global Membership Approach
The Global Membership Approach (GMA) is Lions Clubs International's framework for growing and sustaining membership. District 201N1 has adopted a district-level strategy aligned with the GMA, organised around four themes. Clubs are encouraged to use this as the basis for their own membership planning.
Visibility and community engagement
Increase community visibility
Clubs should actively promote their service activities and achievements — particularly during March Membership Month. Members wearing Lions uniforms at events raises public recognition and signals that Lions is active in the community.
Foster collaboration between clubs
Rather than operating in isolation, clubs are encouraged to pursue joint initiatives, share resources, and conduct cross-club visits. Collaboration strengthens the district network and creates richer experiences for members.
Club development and formation
Support smaller clubs
Targeted support is available for smaller clubs through designated Guiding Lions who specialise in club development. Community needs assessments help clubs better align their activities with local interests, making membership more relevant and appealing.
Establish new branches and specialty clubs
Existing clubs are encouraged to explore new branches in growing areas, and the district actively promotes the formation of specialty clubs — environmental, creative, sporting, and other interest-based clubs — to attract members who may not connect with a traditional club format.
Engage younger members
Lowering the average age of club membership is a district priority. This includes creating e-clubs and specialty clubs that suit younger lifestyles, identifying and empowering energetic leaders to drive youth engagement, and focusing on causes that resonate with younger demographics — such as environmental sustainability and climate action.
People and leadership
Improve gender diversity
With women making up approximately half of Australia's population, clubs are encouraged to actively recruit and welcome female members to achieve a more balanced and representative membership.
Boost female leadership
The district supports proactive recruitment of women into leadership roles through targeted training and external professional development opportunities, ensuring female members are well represented at all levels of club and district leadership.
Renew district leadership
The district is working towards transitioning to newer leadership within the cabinet, with an aspiration of at least 80% new members in district leadership roles within the next three to five years. This generational renewal is key to the long-term vitality of the district.
Planning and training
Develop a membership plan
Every club is encouraged to develop and maintain its own GMA-aligned membership plan, covering annual recruitment targets, retention strategies, and a three-year outlook. Clubs without a current plan are encouraged to start one with support from their Zone Chair.
Training initiatives
The district coordinates Guiding Lion training sessions across all zones, including dedicated sessions for Past District Governors. Training builds the skills and confidence of members at every level to support growth, integration, and service quality.
