LCIF Australia: The Global Engine Behind Our Local Service
When a District 201N1 Club applies for funding to support a community project, runs a vision screening, or responds to a disaster, there is a strong chance that some part of that capability traces back to LCIF — the Lions Clubs International Foundation. It is one of the least visible parts of the Lions movement, yet one of the most consequential.
A foundation built to think bigger
LCIF was founded in 1968 as the charitable arm of Lions Clubs International, established to take the organisation’s mission further by tackling global problems and assisting Lions with large-scale local humanitarian projects. Its mission, as LCIF states it, is to empower Lions clubs, volunteers, and partners to improve health and well-being, strengthen communities, and support those in need through humanitarian services and grants that impact lives globally, while encouraging peace and international understanding. lciflcif
LCIF’s history in Australia
Australia’s relationship with LCIF runs through some of the country’s most significant disasters. LCIF Australia has a proud history of achievement in disaster and emergency relief, medical research, and community service, and was at the coalface alongside LCIF and Lions of Australia for Cyclone Tracy, bushfires, and the Queensland floods. Beyond emergency response, LCIF Australia also assists with local community fundraising for special causes and helps with the development and building of local parks, community venues, and sporting centres. lciflcif
Eight focus areas, one mission
LCIF’s work is organised around a set of global causes, each representing an area where Lions clubs are uniquely positioned to make a difference:
Vision — LCIF is a world leader in the effort to prevent avoidable blindness, working with Lions clubs and local partners on capacity building, training, medications, treatment, disability rehabilitation, and education. This is the cause from which the entire Lions movement’s association with sight originally grew. lcif
Disaster Relief — LCIF provides funding to address preparedness and immediate needs, allowing Lions and their partners to be among the first on the scene following hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and other disasters. lcif
Childhood Cancer — LCIF helps Lions establish programs and provide greater service and access to care for children diagnosed with cancer, offering hope to them and their families. lcif
Hunger — LCIF helps provide healthy meals for the hungry and works to build strategies and capacity for communities where food is scarce. lcif
Youth — LCIF is committed to providing young people with opportunities to succeed, including through the Lions Quest program, which gives young people and educators tools to make positive choices, resist drugs and alcohol, learn through service, and become healthy young adults. lcif
Humanitarian — LCIF supports the wide variety of humanitarian efforts Lions implement and coordinate, providing grants to increase their scale and effectiveness. lcif
Diabetes — LCIF supports Lions in educating the public and establishing programs around this newer global focus area. lcif
Environment — LCIF works with Lions to preserve the planet, recognising that the health of local communities and environments affects everyone, with the goal of helping establish a sustainable future for generations to come. lcif
How a Club’s giving connects to the global picture
It is worth remembering that LCIF and ALF, although both central to Lions giving in Australia, are distinct bodies. Lions Clubs International Foundation is registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charitable organisation and supports philanthropic projects around the world through Lions clubs, while donations made to the Lions Australia Fund for LCIF are tax deductible within Australia. Where ALF funds are directed at Australian welfare and disaster relief, LCIF operates at the global scale — funding the same kinds of causes, but with a worldwide reach that allows it to respond to disasters and humanitarian crises far beyond our shores, as well as channel support back into Australian projects through grants. lcif
