Your Old Glasses Could Give Someone Their World Back.
Most of us have a drawer somewhere — possibly several — containing pairs of spectacles we no longer use. Old prescriptions, superseded frames, the ones we switched out after finally accepting we needed bifocals. They sit there, gathering dust, until eventually they are thrown away. What if those discarded glasses could restore someone’s sight on the other side of the world?
That is precisely what Lions Recycle for Sight Australia makes possible.
What is the program?
Lions Recycle for Sight Australia is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program, headquartered in Queensland and operating throughout Australia and overseas. The program collects used spectacles, assesses and refurbishes them, then distributes them to people in need through humanitarian organisations — whether those organisations are travelling to developing countries or shipping container loads of aid directly from Australia. lionsclubs
The scale of what has been achieved is remarkable. Where do the glasses go?
Over the 26 years that the Australian program has operated, spectacles have been delivered to people in need in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, East Asia, the Far East, China, the countries of the Pacific Rim, and Southern Asia and Oceania. The reach is global, and it extends even to communities that are difficult to access by conventional means. In the past ten years, members of the Lions Marine Branch have used their ocean-going yachts to reach and test villagers in the remotest areas, delivering spectacles directly to them. lionsclubslionsclubs
What can be donated?
Not every pair of spectacles is suitable for the program, and Lions Recycle for Sight Australia asks Lions Clubs and collection partners to undertake a basic check before forwarding glasses to the Recycle Centre. Suitable glasses should have a single vision prescription (no bifocals or multifocals), be clean and in good condition, and ideally have no more than a 1.0 dioptre difference between the lenses. Cases, plano (non-prescription) spectacles, and glasses with scratched, damaged, or broken lenses or frames should not be sent. A moment spent sorting donations before despatch saves significant handling time at the Queensland centre and allows the team to focus on the glasses that can genuinely be put to use. How your club can get involved
The mechanics of participation are straightforward. Lions Clubs and other groups collect used spectacles in their local community and forward suitable pairs to the Lions Recycle Centre at its reply-paid PO Box in Clontarf, Queensland — at no cost to the Club. Collection boxes, labels, and information materials are available at no charge. lionsclubs
Drop-off points at optometrist practices, pharmacies, libraries, and community centres are common collection strategies. Many clubs run regular glasses drives in conjunction with other Lions events. The program integrates naturally with the kinds of community engagement Lions Clubs already undertake.
Why this matters
Poor vision is one of the most common and most correctable causes of disadvantage in the world. For a child, uncorrected short-sightedness means struggling at school. For an adult, it can mean the difference between being able to work and not. A pair of refurbished spectacles — ones that were sitting in a drawer in Port Macquarie or Wauchope or Laurieton — can restore someone’s independence, livelihood, and dignity.
Program Chairperson Ken Leonard has noted that since 1998, Lions Clubs of Australia have been successfully restoring sight to millions of people in need in Australia and adjacent countries.
